Umbria has all the natural beauty and charming hillside towns of its more popular neighbor Tuscany (not to mention equally fabulous food and wine) and it’s much easier to visit on a day trip from Rome. In just two hours you can be in Assisi, home of Saint Francis and his spectacular church with both upper and lower basilicas, the university town of Perugia or, one of our favorites, the medieval hill town of Orvieto.

Situated atop a volcanic outcrop, Orvieto (just an hour and a half from Rome by car) offers a relaxing escape from busy city life. Marvel at the frescoes in the grand 14th century gothic Duomo compared to the older 11th century church of San Giovenale and admire the view from the clock tower in the center of town before heading half an hour down the road for a tour of a local winery and an incredible gourmet lunch paired with the best wines of the region.

Ostia Antica

Take a quick jaunt outside of Rome and visit the ancient port town that used to be Rome’s vital access to the Mediterranean. Ancient Ostia spanned more square footage than Pompeii. Right in the center of Rome, is our enthusiastic cook’s charming, private apartment where, with a group of small travelers, you’ll learn Italian cooking techniques and the skills to cook delicious and traditional Italian dishes in a warm and friendly environment. Before your cooking class, you will go on a walking tour of one of Rome’s famous outdoor food markets, the Campo de’ Fiori, to buy fresh, seasonal ingredients and learn a little about Rome’s culinary history.
Or, go behind the scenes at a local restaurant and learn from the chef how to hand-make pizza from scratch before (of course!) enjoying your handiwork.

To the east of Rome you can visit Roman Emperor Hadrian’s magnificent villa and palaces built in the second century A.D. to see how the emperors lived. Stop for lunch and then head just up the hill to the Villa D’Este, built by Cardinal Ippolito D’Este in the 16th Century. With its beautiful gardens and breathtaking fountains where you can enjoy spectacular views out over the Roman countryside, it’s no surprise that it was a precursor to the palaces of Versailles. It is approximately 30 minutes outside of Rome, but a world away with its quaint country-side feel.

Ancient Rome Tour

Ancient Rome was a civilization founded on the Italian peninsula in the 8th century BCE that, through conquest and assimilation, came to dominate Western Europe and the entire area surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. Eventually succumbing to barbarian invasions in the 5th century, the Roman Empire left behind a legacy that has shaped western civilization even today.

The densely packed archaeological area described as Ancient Rome stretches from the Via dei Fori Imperiali where the impressive forum is located, and the Palatine Hill (where the emperors resided) to the Colosseum, the Circus Maximus and the Baths of Caracalla. Archaeological remains can also be spotted all over the eternal city, in the least expected places, and many can even be discovered beneath the current city of Rome. The Colosseum is offering special tours with special access to three areas that have been closed for centuries: the Arena floor where the gladiators fought, underneath it where the hoists, props and animals were, and up to the 3rd level of seating. Vatican Tour

The modern-day home of the popes, Vatican City is the smallest independent nation state in the world in terms of area and population. The 108 acres within the Vatican city walls house St. Peter’s Basilica (the largest Christian church in the world and an architectural masterpiece of the Renaissance and Baroque), the Vatican Museums with magnificent works of art including the Sistine Chapel with its famous ceiling painted by Michelangelo, and lush immaculately cured gardens. It is the territorial seat of the Holy See, the institutional entity represented by the Pope, and hence the principal ecclesiastical seat of the Catholic Church of both East and West.
