Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D. burying the town under several feet of volcanic ash and preserving its memory for centuries. A trusted driver would pick you up in Rome, drive you (approximately 2.5 hours) to the entrance of the excavations of Pompeii where a prearranged local guide/archaeologist would meet you for a two hour tour.
